Transmission Dynamics of Seasonal Influenza in Abidjan: Epidemiology and Modeling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Influenza poses a global health threat. The disease affects all ages, often with variable clinical features. Abidjan, where this study took place, has a long rainy season AprilJuly with a shorter less intense rainy season October-November. Temperatures vary very little during the year. In temperate areas, children and adults aged 65 years are risk groups. In these countries the seasonality of influenza is clearly defined, with seasonal epidemics in cold weather periods (1). But in the tropics, the risk groups of influenza are not as well defined. Also, the dynamics of influenza transmission and climatological parameters that influence it are specific to the tropical region and not as thoroughly studied.

The impact of seasonal and year-round transmission regimes on the evolution of influenza A virus.
Punctuated antigenic change is believed to be a key element in the evolution of influenza A; clusters of antigenically similar strains predominate worldwide for several years until an antigenically distant mutant emerges and instigates a selective sweep. It is thought that a region of East-Southeast Asia with year-round transmission acts as a source of antigenic diversity for influenza A and se...
متن کاملAbsolute humidity modulates influenza survival, transmission, and seasonality.
Influenza A incidence peaks during winter in temperate regions. The basis for this pronounced seasonality is not understood, nor is it well documented how influenza A transmission principally occurs. Previous studies indicate that relative humidity (RH) affects both influenza virus transmission (IVT) and influenza virus survival (IVS). Here, we reanalyze these data to explore the effects of abs...
متن کاملEnvironmental Predictors of Seasonal Influenza Epidemics across Temperate and Tropical Climates
Human influenza infections exhibit a strong seasonal cycle in temperate regions. Recent laboratory and epidemiological evidence suggests that low specific humidity conditions facilitate the airborne survival and transmission of the influenza virus in temperate regions, resulting in annual winter epidemics. However, this relationship is unlikely to account for the epidemiology of influenza in tr...

Abstract Background and Objective: The emergence of a novel H1N1influenza A virus of animal origin with transmissibility from human to human poses pandemic concern. Current subtypes of Seasonal influenza A viruses spread in human are influenza A H1N1 influenza A H3N2 and influenza type B viruses. The aim of this study was to determine current strains of the H3N2 and new H1N1 subtypes of influe...
متن کاملContrasting the epidemiological and evolutionary dynamics of influenza spatial transmission.
In the past decade, rapid increases in the availability of high-resolution molecular and epidemiological data, combined with developments in statistical and computational methods to simulate and infer migration patterns, have provided key insights into the spatial dynamics of influenza A viruses in humans. In this review, we contrast findings from epidemiological and molecular studies of influe...
